2009 The Year of Astronomy (Sunday, April 26, 2009 - 12:00:00 AM)

SINCE THE BEGINNING of time humans have looked to the skies to tell time, plant and harvest, predict the weather and watch the stars.
There are interesting myths and scientific discoveries you can read about. With so many areas of Astronomy, you are sure to find one that interests you. You can observe the Moon, planets, stars, constellations, Messier objects, comets and man-made satellites with your own eyes, binoculars, or every size telescope.
Amazing Star Facts
Stars have a dramatic range of sizes and colors--a mere 10 miles for a neutron star to super-giant stars over 500 times the size of our Sun.
The color of a star gives clues to how hot it is: deep red is the coolest at 5,000°F; orange is a warm 7,000°F; yellow is a hot
10,000°F; and the hottest blue stars at 20,000°F.
Our Sun is categorized as a medium size star. It is over 865,000 miles in diameter and over 100 times the size of the Earth.
The Sun’s energy takes about 8 minutes to travel to Earth.
Being Green
There are several areas that we can be green to help take care of our Earth. Noise pollution, air pollution and light pollution are all big issues and concerns for a greener environment. Light pollution is encroaching on our ability to see night sky objects. It is having a global effect on animal habitats, human health, heating & cooling resources and the bottom line of your pocket book. What you can do to help is turn off outside lights, use shielded and energy efficient lighting.
Classroom Project
Can you see the constellation of Orion?
Pass out star charts with Orion on it. Discuss how to find and view Orion. Have students observe and make sketches of Orion from where they live and compare with other students how well they could see Orion. Discuss light pollution where they live and how it effects the environment. Discuss what things can be done to help protect the night skies. Contact your city zoning ordinance and mayor’s office and let them know that preserving the dark night sky is important to your class.

Gramie's booties
Red Heart Worsted Weight Yarn or TLC Melissa Yarn works great.
Susan Bates Crochet hook 4.5mm
Chain 30 plus one turn stitch Side of bootee: single crochet 30 stitches plus one turn stitch 8 rows bottom /sole: single crochet 30 stitches plus one turn stitch for 8 rows. side of bootee: single crochet 30 stitches plus one turn stitch for 8 rows.
For the toe: turn wrong side out; use a tapestry needle and yarn gather one end for the toe; tie securely.
For heel: with a tapestry needle gather at the seams edge the middle 8 rows of the heel; seam up the back.
Top of foot: with a tapestry Sew up top of shoe half way. about 15 stitches.
Turn shoe right side out to add a cuff around the back half of booties. Tie on yarn in the Joining; crochet 30 stitches around the sides; 15 for the right side and 15 for the left side booties. single crochet 6 rows.
Gramie always like to make the cuff in a contrasting yarn; usually white and she would make two little pom poms to flop around on the top of the shoe. I do not mess with making pom poms.
I will try to post a photo of a pair of booties soon. The photo will be of a keepsake pair my Gramie made me.
A variation of the pattern with ridges on the sides, crochet INTO the single stitches. Four ridges equals 8 rows.

I am slowed down by this stupid neurological pain. What is odd, is during my recovery from brain surgery I did not experince neurolgical pain Until now. WHY NOW! So far it is runner up for the most painful. The colon spasms had been the worst thing to deal with. Brain surgery is a cake walk compared to colon spasms and neurological pain. I keep telling the pain to go away. The pain is a mixture of numbness, stinging, screaming pain in my lower legs and lover left arm. I am on Lyrica, a two edge sword of a med; I have a love hate relationship with it. I am so down hearted. I had the unwanted hystermetamy and am recovering well from it when this mess of neurolgical pain started. I am also trying to cope with the hormone issues that have come with the hysteretamy. OH GOD HELP. Don and I have been so hurt by the losses that have come with the hysteretamy and we were looking forward to at least me being well so we could move on with life. So I would feel up to doing and going place with him. We really enjoy each others company and we want to do activites together. Sickness is so stressful. Don is a God gift. We have been through so much and his care and love have been amazing. We have been stretch and denied so much and yet we are still together. He telles me everyday he loves me and he tells me often i am beautiful. Sickness is not pretty and it takes its toll. I can hardly do much because of this nero pain. I do not want to paint; it hurts to much and is not the kind of pain i want to paint. It is so edgy. I have painted suffering and some of the anxiety induced by pain. But this nero pain has an edge that is hateful, bloody tears, curosive, means to take away all enjoyments; the king of pain that consumes and distroys. OH God protect us!!! It is a pain that opens the door to dark thoughts. Hope in today becomes thin and one thinks about eternity. Hell has not hope; you know everday will be bad. But here I live in hope and today is very painful.
I had the idea to aquire a set of iries that had been hyberdized for Harding University. I made some phone calles from leds given about these iries. Well lets just say it simpley I am a no body with no real connections. So I am not going to pursur it. I own one of the iries Carrie Lou Little a lovely deep purple conffection. As it double itself I will share it. I did find photgraphs of the 6 Harding iries at the Harding History house and I took ditital photos of them. I am looking forward to doing some watercolors of the iries as well as the one that blooms in my garden. I have seen watercolor prints of these iries but they were not on show at the Harding History House and the courater did not know anything about watercolor prints of the iries. I will be conntent with having the purple iries and at least having photo of the others. I have a photo album of my iries that bloom in my garden. I will place the photo of the Harding Iries in a differnt secion of the album.
Some good news is that my eye sight keeps improving and it appears I am seeing more perifreal in the left eye. My world/seeing is about 2/3ds less flat( I have depth perception issues.) The nerological asspect is still messy and that is part of the reason I am not allowed to drive. sighs. I struggle to see to read but thankfull I can see to read. I can see about half of the night skys consellations; I am trying to learn the night sky anyway. Which brings me to the subject of light pollution. TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF at night!!! and enjoy the darkness and the night sky.
Well i am tired; going to have to rest. take care.
Being a nobody part two: Well I called the city regualtion office because i wanted to know more about some of the regulations for noise polluiton and ligh polluion. I did find out out that a loop hole has been provided that some cities do not have to comply to lighting regulations. Searcy opted out through this loop hole. Then what is the point of having a good regulation.! sigh. Do not have a fighting change against light polltion... no one cares.. wopte do if we can not see the night sky full of stars and lovely nebula and milky way. Well i care! but of course i have not a counts worth. Well since i am a no body the person i talked to was in a hurry to go to lunch. I asked for info but he did not take my name or address so very unlikely I will Not recieve any info. I got a rushed got to go I 'll give this to my boss. yeah i am sure. I was culled out as just a nusanse call about something as silly as nosie and light pollution. Gee i guess i will have to wear ear plugs in my own house and just look at star charts and pictures of what the night sky looks like.
When I am queen I will deal with these issues in a very royal way. There will be clean air, clean water, serious recycling, a metro coast to coast, protect dark skys and i am sure other worthy causes and enjoy myself royally. But for now I am a lowly tbi survior and commoner having a vent. smiles.

Windchime (Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 12:00:00 AM)

I now have three windchimes throughout my yard. Two were gifts from students when I taught. the windshimes are very specail to me. The third windchime I bought with xmas money. It seemed a frivous purchase but I wanted it and after much vasilating on the cost and it being a windchime I ordered it. After xmas I put the boxed windchime in my closet and ancipated finding a place for it outside in the spring. Today was that momentous day. The windchime hold meaning for me; it is a marker of being here today. I almost died 2 1/2 years ago. I did not walk away from almost dieing without scares. I have so many physical ones and they go deep. I live everday facing those truths of having survived brain surgery. it makes me lol at the thought of having had brain surgery; that is so crazy; as crazy as jumping out of a plaine or bundy jumping. Two things I will likely never do now. I might have before but not now; becasue it is not a safe indevor for my head. The Seahorse wind chime is supose to have a unique sound when the wind blows through it. I bought a new shepard's hook and put it in the rose flowerbed. It is to be a good reminder of life and living is good.
I want to thank my friends and especially my husband who have been true friends. I know it has been so hard for so many of you to know what I was like before and see how I am today. I am different but you know I like this new me. My life views are more laid back and my faith has grown and my goals have changed.
What keeps me trying is know that it took Edison over 3000 tries over 50 years to prefect a long lasting light bulb. Proficancy comes with practice. I am practicing enjoying living.
