Wireless Networking! (Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 12:27:28 PM)
[Post a Comment]

Last night, my friend Erastos sold me a wireless network card for my laptop. To test it, we went to the new coffee shop in Searcy, Thanks a Latte, and it worked great. We didn't get the best of download speeds, but we think that was because of their Internet connection, not the wireless connection itself.

Anyway, I figure at best there are only 2 or 3 wireless internet points in all of Searcy. One of those would be secured in some way at Harding University. The other one I already mentioned, and Midnight Oil coffee house may have one as well. I swear, Searcy is such a technological wasteland...

I'm posting this from my laptop connected to the wireless network we have up here at work. I'm getting 36 to 48 Mbps connect speeds--not shabby at all.

I may have to go war driving sometime soon! I would only use free-to-the-public access points, but it would be extremely fun just to find others!

I've been sick the past few days, suppose I still am. Carolaina suspects that we both caught strep throat. I'll probably have sinus problems for weeks now.

I found out this week that some friends of ours in Memphis had their baby on Saturday! Say hello to Madeline Gail Harwell!

I just can't get enough of this song from Cowboy Bebop episode #24. Listen to a 10 second sample of the Seatbelts song, Call Me Call Me. I realized (yet again) that I really, really like Symphonic Rock music--like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra song, Christmas Eve in Sarajevo. Or perhaps The Verve song, Bitter Sweet Symphony. This goes along with my like of extremely complex, beautiful music. It combines the best of classical and rock music. Just adding a violin is bound to improve any rock song--check out Annie Lennox's Walking on Broken Glass as an example. For another good example, you can also check out the only Christian band that I like: Iona.

Cowboy Bebop (Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 12:16:23 PM) [Post a Comment]

I've been into the anime show Cowboy Bebop a lot lately. For now, I only have disc 1 and 6 of the 6 DVD set of the TV episodes and also the movie. One episode in particular has quickly become my favorite--#24 "Hard Luck Woman". It's up there around ST:TNG's "Inner Light" level of quality. The song played near the end of the episode is extremely beautiful and touching. Listen to a 10 second sample of the Seatbelts song: Call Me Call Me.

I never thought I would care to have a dog at all, but now I'm someday wanting to get a Welsh Corgi and name him Ein. :) Ein rocks!

I've also added links to two excellent CB fan sites to my links page. Anyway, I highly recommend this anime show even if you don't normally care for anime. It's really good.

Carolaina and I had kind of a plain weekend. Once again, between Thackerland and GameXChange, I picked up 14 more Atari games. No rare ones this time, but I did pick up a Complete In Box (CIB) Star Raiders. Expect to see it on eBay soon. A quick update about the Mountain King auction on eBay: it sold for $49!

I'm pretty proud of myself for accomplishing one thing this weekend, however small it is. A few weeks ago at Thackerland, I had picked up an extra Sega Genesis controller to use with my Atari 2600 system. I got tired of constantly moving my one and only Genny controller between the Atari and the Genesis systems. Coach Elliot had an old, beat up Genny controller that I knew I could fix up. This thing was in sad shape--a corrosive liquid had been spilled on it that ate away some of the surface and the buttons didn't want to work. I took the thing apart (not easy since two of the screws were rust-welded in place) and cleaned it thoroughly. Now it works like new, looks fine, and works well with my Atari system.

I've been getting good play time in with Dungeon Siege. I'm once again playing through a mod that makes the multi-player map into a single player map. I always keep coming back to this fun game.

"Atari, When Only the Best Will Do!" (Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 12:16:12 PM) [Post a Comment]

I picked up 14 more Atari games this weekend, except one of them turned out to be a fairly rare Colecovision game, Mountain King. Since I don't collect for the Colecovision, I slapped that puppy up on eBay. Between this and selling another complete, rare item to a fellow AtariAge message board member, this little hobby of mine is turning out to be quite profitable. :)

It's funny, you wouldn't think that the podunk, backwoods, redneck state of Arkansas would have any kind of classic video game stuff. This place is an Atari collector's goldmine!

Carolaina wanted to find some more Polly Pockets, but no luck. We must have visited nearly every yard sale in White County as well as Thackerland--none to be found anywhere.

I've added a link to my comics page. Yesterday morning I discovered this neat British webcomic: Scary Go Round. It reminds me of Scooby Doo style of horror, except a little more mature with college-age characters. It also has healthy doses of British humor and innuendo. Check it out!
