Saturday: FUN, Sunday: NOT (Monday, March 14, 2005 - 12:40:52 PM)
[Post a Comment]

Anthony came over on Saturday and we spent most of our time going through the D&D campaign he came up with and is DM'ing me through. My half-elf ranger encountered a young green dragon while going through some caves. It was a long, hard battle since my character was only at level 3. "Was" at level 3 being the appropriate term here. :) After that epic battle, my character enjoyed some well-cooked dragon and collected the small hoard of treasure.

It was nice, sunny and warm on Saturday--a wonderful day to be alive. Sunday, though, was as opposite as you could imagine--cold, overcast and bleak. Normally, I like cloudy days. In some ways I fit the sterotypical programmer type: I only come out of my dark cave if you drag me kicking and screaming. But a day like that coming on the heels of a great day, just put me in a funk. It's ok though, I comforted myself by playing through some Neverwinter Nights.

Some house problems are also dragging us down these past few days. We had JUST finished paying off the stove top/range that we had to replace and now our dryer has died on us. Mysteriously, some of the outlets in the house are dying one-by-one. The first one I noticed, incidentally, was the one the dryer was plugged into. I plugged it into a different outlet and it worked fine for a week. I suspect the dryer just needs a new belt, though. It makes me wonder what else in/on this old house is going to fall apart next? Ah, the [UN-]joys of home ownership. :(  One of these days, I'll post here an economic theory of mine involving poverty.

The weather this week is going to be just like what we had on Sunday. Oh sure, enjoy the sunshine today, because it's going to change. Here's the Searcy forecast as of about noon today. (I'll copy the text here since any page I could link would change over time.)

Tonight: a low of 36°

Tuesday: Rain Likely with a high of 46° and a low of 35°

Wednesday: 30% Chance of Rain with a high of 44° and a low of 36°

Thursday: 40% Chance of Rain with a high of 53° and a low of 36°

Friday: 20% Chance of Rain with a high of 57°
Cold and wet all week. :( It looks like old man winter just has to have one last gasp before spring.

busy week (Friday, March 11, 2005 - 5:30:27 PM) [Post a Comment]

On Tuesday, Carolaina took Hobbes and Precious to the vet. We got Hobbes fixed. ("Was he broken?" Carolaina will ask. "You know what I mean") She insisted on getting Precious declawed. I consider declawing to be mutilation, but she insisted. Both kitties were very glad to come home a couple of days later. I stood my ground and refused to have Hobbes declawed, though--I will not have my kitten hurt like that.

Carolaina has also been working at the Carmicheal Community Center nearly every night this week. The usual Harding student help has been gone on Spring Break this week, which also means that Midnight Oil has been closed this week. You'd think that they didn't want the business. Oh well, Thanks a Latte was more than willing to be open this week. >:]

Check this out, interactive art that will blow your mind! ZOOMQUILT

Anthony will be coming over tomorrow. I haven't seen him in about a month and I hope we'll have time to get back into the D&D campaign.

anime weekend (Monday, March 7, 2005 - 12:48:18 PM) [View 3 Comments or Post a Comment]

I finished watching all the episodes of Witch Hunter Robin this weekend. This series is just such a high-quality, mature show that it will be really hard to try and watch other, lesser anime shows from now on. Highly recommended. Even Carolaina has gotten interested in it and we're about halfway through watching it together. You know it's got to be good if she is not only willing to sit through it, but is also interested in the show.

I also can't seem to get enough of the theme songs/music for this show. I keep listening to the title song, "Shell", over and over again. If you like techno music, you must get the Witch Hunter Robin OST.

I picked up a few more Atari 2600 games on Saturday. One of them is another rarity 5. I wanted to list them here, but didn't update my blog over the weekend while I was home.

Witch Hunter Robin (Tuesday, March 1, 2005 - 7:42:53 PM) [Post a Comment]

I now have another favorite anime series. Witch Hunter Robin is AWESOME!!! After only watching the first 5 minutes of the first episode, I knew I had something special. As soon as we have money again, I will HAVE to track down the DVDs.

Of course, I have to mention that I expected it to be special. I thoroughly research TV shows and movies before I see them--that way I'm assured of seeing something good. Life is too short to waste on bad shows.

UPDATE (8:18 pm): It seems Robin is quite the little pyro.

"Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" (Monday, February 28, 2005 - 12:14:21 PM) [Post a Comment]

Happiness is the smell of Earl Grey tea in the morning.

I got to enjoy the fast, fast, fast download speeds of our new DSL this weekend. So far, I'm using it like a VCR--downloading TV show(s) that I missed during the week then deleting them after watching them. I don't see it as being any different from taping it off of TV on the VCR, then recording over it later. I can see why digital video recorders are so popular--you can pause the show at any time if needed, rewind to something you've missed, and watch it more than once.

I've been feeling really happy this morning. One possible reason why: I've been walking on our treadmill on and off in the mornings for the past 3-4 weeks while watching a Cowboy Bebop episode each time. Most episodes are 24:48, so I go ahead and walk the full 25 minutes. I'm now at the halfway point through the series (26 episodes total). After I get through Cowboy Bebop, I'll start in on the Robotech series while I walk--even though it won't be anywhere near as good as CB. Well, this morning there was some measureable progress for all these efforts.

I'm also really happy about the DSL. It just feels right--the way things should be. We can always be online if we like and still get phone calls. The difference between it and dialup is night-and-day. I feel like I LIVE online and sometimes feel odd when I'm not. Now, at home if I ever want any kind of info (usually weather, news, encyclopedia, etc) I can just go to the computer and get it. I also no longer have to miss out on any large media files I come across (such as RetroGaming Radio, BBC News, Homestar Runner, etc).
