car love (Monday, May 16, 2005 - 9:34:46 PM)
[Post a Comment]

I have fallen in love with a car. I've always had a thing for Mustangs, but the modern ones haven't interested me at all. Until now. Have you seen the 2005 Mustang? Yes? No? If not, here you go:

2005 Ford Mustang GT

I want, I Want, I WANT!!

Here's another picture, so you can drool along with me:

I think I like the dark red color the most. Ah, just imagine: a driving vacation in one of those with some Doctor Who audiobooks on CD. It may be a while before I can get one, but until then--I can dream.

Check out the official site--lots of neat options and information about the car. If you dig deep enough (click on the "See the Legend in Action" button on the Overview tab and navigate to the Gallery from there), you can watch some neat videos and commercials. Normally, I hate commercials with a passion, but these are really good.

quiz thing (Friday, May 13, 2005 - 12:36:22 PM) [View Comment or Post a Comment]

Carolaina's cousin, Ryan Schnitzer, has found another quiz. I strongly disagree with the second one, but the rest are very nearly spot-on. Here's my results:

The Keys to Your Heart

You are attracted to those who are unbridled, untrammeled, and free.
In love, you feel the most alive when everything is uncertain, one moment heaven... the next moment hell.
You'd like to your lover to think you are optimistic and happy.
You would be forced to break up with someone who was ruthless, cold-blooded, and sarcastic.
Your ideal relationship is open. Both of you can talk about everything... no secrets.
Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.
You think of marriage as something precious. You'll treasure marriage and treat it as sacred.
In this moment, you think of love as something you can get or discard anytime. You're feeling self centered.

fun weekend (Tuesday, May 10, 2005 - 12:31:12 PM) [Post a Comment]

We had a wonderful weekend up at Melbourne. Carolaina's dad's side of the family get together there every year during the Pioneer Days festival. It was much better this year than some. I managed to get my hours in at work earlier than usual on Friday, so we still had a few hours of daylight for the drive up there.

When we arrived, we visited for a bit with her aunt & uncle, Carl Ray and Judy. Another aunt & uncle, Doug and Pam, were busy around back with a dog about to have puppies. We all decided to take a walk around the court square. The AGFC once again had one of their huge mobile aquariums there, but it was on the southeast corner of the square instead of the usual southwest corner. As always, there were plenty of vendors selling redneck and Confederate stuff. Carolaina and I were happy to see that our favorite BBQ vendor, Uncle Don's BBQ, was there again in their usual spot.

I should mention here that Grammie's house is just down from the court square behind one of the buildings around the outside of the court square. It's very convenient because everything we want to do and see during the weekend is a relatively short walk from her house.

We found out that the dog had 5 puppies overnight! The poor dog had them by herself overnight with noone awake to help or watch. Each puppy came out healthy and fine, though.

On Saturday morning, we each did our own thing until time for the parade at 10:00. They got started late, and it didn't reach our spot until 10:40. I had brought Carolaina's digital camera and ended up taking 125 pictures of the parade. I would have taken even more, but the memory card was full. She fussed at me for filling up the card, but luckily I had brought my laptop--so I copied off all the photos and deleted them from the camera. I would post some of the photos here, but I don't think anyone but me would be interested in them. Lots of neat classic cars, though.

For lunch, we had our favorite BBQ from our favorite vendor, Uncle Don's. Carolaina and I have started a new family tradition by getting a pork sandwich with cole slaw for lunch (and sometimes supper) on Saturday from there. Good stuff. Granny had cooked up a HUGE 23-pound turkey for everyone that morning, but it didn't go to waste. Nearly all of it was eaten by the time we left on Sunday afternoon.

Since I had Carolaina's camera, I wanted to get some video of Grammie. That afternoon, while some of us were chatting on the porch, I videoed her and Carolaina chatting. I would like to post it here, but it ended up being a 2 minute, 35 MB file. It could use some editing, anyway.

Carolaina's uncle Doug had found an old digital camera one of the vendors were selling for $1. It was so cheap because the screen had decided to stop working. The rest of the camera worked just fine, though. We used my laptop to access the photos on it and found that the previous owners had about 100 photos still there. If I had a CD burner on my laptop, I would have put them on CDR for Doug to give back to them. Since that wasn't an option, we just deleted them off the camera. We found that it still took good pictures for a 1.3 megapixel camera made in 2000. He also mentioned that he might even be able to fix the screen. Between the dollar and $10 for a USB cable, he got a mostly functional digital camera for only $11! Can't beat that.

Since I knew that her uncle Carl Ray is a Doctor Who fan, I had brought all the current episodes (at the time) of the new series with me. I had hoped to maybe show him one or two of the episodes. That afternoon, I hooked up my laptop to Grammie's TV so we could watch them easily. Crowding around a laptop's LCD screen just doesn't work well. We ended up having a Doctor Who marathon and watched all 6 episodes! It started out just me and Carl Ray watching the shows, but as other family wandered though, it would catch their attention. Before it was over, we had nearly everyone watching the shows with us. All of them loved every minute of it. By the time the last episode ended at 11:00 that night, they were all Doctor Who fans. Some of them had never seen an episode before, either.

Oh, I should mention one thing. Carolaina and I slept in the bedroom on the far end of the house--away from the court square. That made it much easier to get to sleep. On both Friday and Saturday nights, they have a huge dance on the court square with lots of live, hick country music until at least midnight each night. I could barely hear it at that end of the house so I was able to get to sleep a whole lot easier.

Sunday morning, Carolaina and I fulfilled another family tradition. We took a walk down the road and around the city graveyard. The road Grammie lives on goes slightly downhill about half a mile and crosses a babbling brook (that won't shut up! Ha!). The road then rises uphill slightly and cuts between cowfields until it reaches a fair-sized graveyard. After walking down there and back, we get a pretty good little workout.

Sunday morning, most of the us guys sat on the porch and chatted. At least, I chatted with them until Carolaina wanted us to walk up to the local grocery store. It seems that every year, we can't get away without Carolaina getting some sort of flowers or plants. She bought 6 pots of some kind of vine plant with little flowers--you'll have to ask her the specific name.

Around noon on Sunday, the whole family gets together to eat and enjoy Grammie's wonderful cooking. After that meal, there was hardly any turkey (or much other food) left. After the meal, we usually get packed to leave. This time, though, we didn't want to leave that relaxing place, so we stayed for a couple of hours longer than usual.

Someone then got an idea to head over to a discount store that was either called Deans or DNL--I'm not sure which. Carolaina went with them, while I stayed and chatted with Carl Ray about weather. You see, Carl Ray is a retired NWS weatherman. He even worked in the storm center in Norman, OK for a while. It's always fascinating to hear him talk about his experiences and general weather knowledge.

We finally got the will to leave when most others were heading out around 3:00 that afternoon. Of course, Carolaina slept nearly the whole way home! I'm really looking forward to next year's Pioneer Days.

quick note (Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 12:26:10 PM) [Post a Comment]

Just a quick note--been too busy to post lately.

On the heels of the bad joke involving yesterday's date (May the 4th [be with you]), here's a couple of hilarious sites for you:

How Lightsabers Work

The Darth Side: Memoirs of a Monster

This weekend is Pioneer Days up in Melbourne, so we'll get to enjoy a quiet couple of days with Carolaina's dad's side of the family.

UPDATE [7:09 PM]: I've added a couple of links to my comics page. Interestingly enough, they're both print comics.

The first one, Girl Genius, is updated semi-regularly and has two story lines to follow, the beginning and a later series. It revolves around a bright teenage girl in school (think Harry Potter, but no magic) during a steam engine age, except the steam engine technology has been developed to an extreme. I link to the first one so I can get caught up on the story line.

The second one, Daisy Kutter, has just a few example pages online. It involves a young girl gunslinger trying to get away from a dark past. Imagine a western with robot technology and aliens. I link to it as more of a reminder of it's existence than anything else.

With both of these comics, I plan to buy the print versions if/when I ever have any spending money. The problem is that if and when I do get any spare cash, there's always something else I want more at that moment. *sigh*

quiz results (Saturday, April 30, 2005 - 4:48:39 PM) [Post a Comment]

Carolaina wanted me to post this. It's a neat quiz that her cousin came across. I'll be posting her quiz results in her blog when I get home.

Your brain: 60% interpersonal, 100% visual, 20% verbal, and 220% mathematical!
Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.
My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
