I came across a really interesting story on Slashdot today. It seems scientists can now revive dead dogs, with seemingly no ill effects. I'll copy the text of the Slashdot article here:
"U.S. scientists have managed to revive dead dogs to life, by using a technique similar to cryogenation, in which the dogs' blood was drained and replaced by a cold, saline liquid. A couple of hours later, their blood was replaced, and an electric shock brought them back to life with no brain damage. The technology will be tested on humans within the next year."
If you read the linked article, they intend for this to be used in humans for trauma death cases. Say, a gang member or a soldier was shot to death. If they get him to the hospital in time, they could use this procedure to fix the wounds, then bring the patient back to life. Amazing stuff.
I can just imagine the consumer demand for this, though. Think of it: Little Fifi dies of old age and the stupid, bereaved and grieving owner can't stand to live without him. She has this procedure done each time the poor thing dies. Before long, the weary animal starts to resemble the doggie version of the Grim Reaper, just without the robe and scythe. But hey! The owner feels better! Grrrrr.
...
And now for more ranting. I just don't watch TV anymore--at all. I do listen to the local ABC station news while at work before I head home everyday, since I have a radio that also picks up TV station audio. Other than that, nothing. I can't stand commercials anymore--it's like they're designed to rot your mind. They few times I come home and Carolaina has the TV on, I have to go into another room because the inanity of it all annoys me so much.
I do try to listen to the radio, but I'm now losing even that. It's rare any more that I'll hear I song that I like, much less one that I'll put up with. Don't even get me started about the annoying rise of hip-hop rap crap. On some stations, their morning shows just aren't worth listening to. Most of the time all they do is chatter about the most inane and annoying things. I really don't care about the DJ's personal lives or about the latest Holleywood trash/gossip/sin.
Then, about three weeks ago, my favorite radio station here in Searcy went off the air--no reason given and no warning. (107.1 Y FM ... But, but WHY?) I station surf like some couch potatoe guys channel surf on the TV. With one less radio station, I'm far less likely to have a radio station I can switch to and listen to something I'll put up with. 107.1 would more likely than not play something I like. Now the only non-hick, non-redneck, non-country station in Searcy is, what, 99.1 (the Diamond)? But, just like every Searcy station, it won't reach to Little Rock and gets knocked off the air every time we have the least of storms.
That leaves me just a few Little Rock pop/rock/classic rock stations that I can put up with. If I had the money, I'd buy me one of those expensive car radios that has an internal hard drive or flash drive that can store and play hundreds of MP3s. It would also have to get the weatherband. I wouldn't ever have to worry about radio stations ever again.

Even though I had to work Saturday, Carolaina and I packed enough activity in for a two-day weekend--that's how it felt to me anyway.
We went to Thackerland, but there wasn't any new Atari stuff. I picked up a better copy of a game I already have--Megamania. We enjoyed looking around, anyway. Later, we stopped by GameXChange, but they had no new Atari stuff, either. I did find Star Trek: Nemesis on widescreen DVD for just over four dollars, though! Amazingly the disc is in great shape despite being so cheap. I haven't seen it yet after all this time, so I'm in no hurry to watch it. Besides, that evening we were more interested in watching Doctor Who. Speaking of which...
The last two final episodes of the season were incredible. It was so good that Carolaina wants to watch them again! High praise indeed. Here's some of the more memorable dialog (I'll transcribe some of it to get it right):
"My masters, they fear the Doctor."
The Daleks open a communications channel to the space station, "I will talk to the Doctor.", the middle one says.
"Oh will you? That's nice. Hello!", the Doctor replies with a cheery wave.
"The Daleks strategem nears completion. The fleet is almost ready. You will not intervene."
"Oh really? Why is that, then?"
"We have your associate. You will obey or she will be exterminated."
The Doctor quietly responds, "No".
The whole group looks at him in shock.
The Daleks ask, "Explain yourself."
With increasing determination, he says, "I said No."
The Dalek speaking gets increasingly agitated, "What is the meaning of this negative?"
"It means No."
"But she will be destroyed!"
The Doctor gets increasingly angry, "No! ... Because this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to rescue her. I'm going to save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet, and then I'm going to save the Earth, and then, just to finish you off, I'm going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!"
"But you have no weapons, no defences, no plan."
"Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death!"
The Doctor looks to Rose on the screen, "Rose?"
"Yes, Doctor?" she replies.
"I'm coming to get you." as he turns off the screen.
Me: GO, DOCTOR GO!!! (I guess you'd have to see the scene for yourself to get the full impact.)
The Doctor stares down a group of Daleks, "You know what they call me in the ancient legends of the Dalek homeworld? The Oncoming Storm."
It's going to be a long wait for the Doctor Who Christmas Special this December. Then, it will be another wait for the next season to start in late March of 2006.

I realized that I haven't posted in a while. Shame on me.
I've started on a diet that was given to me by Carolaina's cousin, ArchSchnitz. It's a variation of the Atkin's diet that's more true to the science behind it than it is to the diet itself. Seriously, have you checked out some of the Atkins products? The top of the labels lie like dogs. For example, a so-called protien bar we had been buying proclaims "2 Grams of Carbs" on the front, but if you read the nutritional label you'll find that it really has 21 grams. Anyway, In two months, ArchSchnitz ended up losing 55 pounds! I've been on this diet since Sunday and already I've lost 6 pounds--more weight loss in two days than I've had in two months. I just need to remember to take my multi-vitamins. I am SO looking forward to being truly thin for the first time in my life.

If you watch my webcam, you may have noticed a change of scenery the past few days. I now have an office! Wohoo! I can now work in peace & quiet and keep the room as dark as I like. Also, radio reception is FAR better in this office than it was out in the open cubicles. I can now listen to the NWS weatherband! This is awefully counter-intuitive. You'd think I'd get WORSE radio reception here within a metal "box" that's within the much larger metal box of the building itself. Oh well.
The penultimate episode of this season's Doctor Who aired this weekend. It was the best episode yet. I can't put into words how good this one is. To give you an idea, I was in a euphoric state for at least an hour after I watched it--it's that good. If you haven't seen any of this show yet, do what it takes so you can.

I took another quiz that ArchSchnitz posted about. I was rather suprised at my results:
You Are The Outlaw "Sure, I'll do it. My way." Just because you do not conform to the same laws and rules as everyone else does not mean that you are a bad guy. You travel your own path, separate from those around you, with your own reasons for doing what you do. Because of this and your own nature, it goes without saying that you are generally misunderstood. That does not matter much, though, as people love you for being who you are. You are pretty well set in your ways and have no real intention of changing. This can come across as a flicker of arrogance if your not careful. You do what is right for you, and God help anyone who stands in your way.
Which Classic Story Role Do You Play? brought to you by Quizilla
Sometime later (tonight maybe?), I'll post about a neat project that both Carolaina and I are working on.
UPDATE [6:16 PM]: Carolaina has also taken the quiz, and her results are spooky accurate.

I would say it was a good weekend overall, but I had to work Saturday. That's not to say Saturday was bad--not at all. I mostly enjoyed what I worked on Saturday and got a lot done, but it took up half my weekend.
Yesterday, though, was outstanding. I watched the latest Doctor Who episode, The Empty Child, and it blew me away. There are no spoilers here; Carolaina hasn't watched it yet. It was like the best of the classic series mixed together with the best of the new series--all put together into a great 2-part episode that continues next week! Unlike last week's episode, which left me bawling like a newborn--Father's Day was a wringer of a story that left me emotionally drained, and I rarely (if ever) cry during movies and TV shows.
In the evening, I got back into Neverwinter Nights and couldn't stop playing. I picked back up where I left off in the Shadowlords fan-made campaign. It has an incredible storyline that's hard to get away from. I think I finally went to bed around 11:30 last night. I just wish the creator had spent more time on the doorways of the interior areas and kept them from repeating into infinity (you'd understand if you played the game).
Despite a lack of recent progress, I am still losing weight. During lunch today, my wedding ring fell off my hand while I was brushing crumbs off my pants. I suppose now I need get it resized... or... [REFORGED IN THE FIRES OF MOUNT DOOM!]. Whichever is easier.
