Finally, here's the newspaper article I promised.
Painting a Recovery
Patient becomes volunteer after rehabilitation
by Sarah Koehler
For The Daily Citizen
Carolaina Ferren came to White County Medical Center's Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit after a blood vessel ruptured in her brain. During her stay, she was the second-youngest patient in the unit. Ferren, a former teacher, was accustomed to an active lifestyle that consisted of watercolor painting, Tai Chi and quilting.
In fact, four years prior to her stay at WCMC, Ferren volunteered for Inpatient Rehab once a week with the White County Quilt Guild. As a volunteer, she helped the patients work on quilting projects. She never expected that she would be one of the participants in a recreational therapy four years later.
"While I was in inpatient rehab, the total therapy program was so helpful to me." said Ferren. "The therapists asked me about my interests, and they tailored the therapy to that. They incorporated Tai Chi and watercolor painting in to my therapy. This made me feel more comfortable and less scared since I was doing something that was so familiar."
Rebecca Pearrow, Recreational Therapist for WCMC, worked with Ferren while she was a patient. After Ferren returned home, Pearrow called to follow-up. At this time, Ferren told Pearrow that she wanted to donate some art supplies and volunteer again at the hospital.
"A main goal of recreational therapy is community re-entry, so we were pleased that Carolaina wanted to volunteer," said Pearrow. "We were also thrilled with her donation of art supplies. We use these items every day. Carolaina has saved us a lot of money and is giving the precious gift of her time."
Ferren is helping lead the diversionary groups. These groups are scheduled for patients to have fun. Ferren shows the patients how to make art projects with the materials she donated to the Rehab Unit.
"I know from my own experience how important an artistic outlet is," said Ferren. "And I wanted to give back to a program that helped me so much."
The Rehabilitation at White County Medical Center is a 31-licensed bed comprehensive rehabilitation program that enables patients to overcome injury or illness and continue living life to its fullest. The staff includes physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, certified rehabilitative registered nurses, social workers, recreational therapists and a dietitian team. For more information, contact WCMC's Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at (501) 278-3480.
The photo above the article unfortunately doesn't show Carolaina at all, but a patient busy painting with Mrs. Pearrow in the background. I don't mind that so much, I just hope people don't think that Carolaina was pictured. What they didn't say in the article is that Carolaina's donation was the largest the rehab has ever gotten (so far). It was enough to completely fill up the passenger space in the employee's mini-van who came to pick it all up.

I said I would next post a newspaper article about Carolaina, but I came across some neat sites I wanted to get into my blog before I forget them. The first two links I found via BoingBoing.
Star Trek themed Home Theater
I WANT!!! His site (linked from above site) is being hammered hard right now, but be sure to check it out--lots of photos and info about how he constructed it. Also don't miss the link to the java-enabled 360° view of the place.
Russian Space Suit as a Satellite
I may have to track down someone with a radio that can pick up this thing's signals. To find out when it's coming overhead for you/us, you can use the Heaven's Above site and do a search for the ISS.
Video Game Endings
In my personal opinion, Super Mario 2 (US version) has the absolute best ending of any game. The end music alone is divine.
I've finally rediscovered a book from my childhood that I've really missed: The Green Futures of Tycho by William Sleator. The book was in my elementary school library and I had checked it out only three or four times, but have never forgotten it. It had been out of print for a long while now, but appears to have been republished. The story is about a youngest child of genius parents who finds a time-travelling device. He uses it to get back at his abusive older brothers and sister with increasingly disasterous results. It really shows the pitfalls and dangers of time travel. Mr. Sleator has written it so well that it feels scarily plausible.

Here's an old blog meme for you. Take your [digital] music collection, load ALL of the songs on one big playlist, set for shuffle mode, and hit play. What first 10 songs are played for you? One rule: no skipping any old songs that you now find embarrassing.
Here's mine:
- 10cc - Things We Do For Love
- Def Leppard - Photograph
- Eagles - Lyin' Eyes
- Huey Lewis & the News - The Power of Love
- Savage Garden - To the Moon and Back
- Heart - These Dreams [!!!]

- Amy Grant & Peter Cetera - Next Time I Fall in Love
- The Beatles - Twist and Shout
- James Taylor - How Sweet It Is
- Guess Who - These Eyes
Not too bad. I would have preferred the Eagles song be "In the City", which is now my favorite by them. I got really lucky to have that Heart song play--it's one of my absolute all-time favorites.
I got this idea from an old post on John Scalzi's site.
Next up, a Searcy Daily Citizen newspaper article about Carolaina!

Carolaina and I had our picture taken during the Aristotle Christmas party. Here it is for you to admire. Between my weight loss and her continued recovery, we look good!
As always, you can click the photo for a larger version.

I am just fascinated with these little triops! I tried to take pictures of them, but Carolaina's little point-and-shoot digital camera doesn't allow me the control necessary to get good photos of them. But, it does have a neat video feature that I managed to use (sorta). It can't quite focus on the triops themselves (only the tank), and the lighting could be better, but you can at least see them swimming around. They're now just big enough to begin to see some detail in them.
